Kaira Brown Wins NJSIAA Meet of Champions 400 Meters

Make that back-to-back gold medals for Kaira Brown.
The Kent Place senior won her second consecutive 400-meter race at the 2019 NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Sunday at the Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River. Brown won in 55.91 seconds, improving on her winning time a year ago of 57.00.

“It’s really exciting,” Brown said. “I love coming out here and running with the best in the state and that’s always really fun. It’s really cool to be able to win again.”
Rebecca Ochan of Highland Park placed second in 56.59 and Lily Orr quickly followed with a time of 56.84. Brown was the favorite coming in, but Ochan and Orr were more than capable of taking the crown.
But Brown didn’t let that happen. She was still out of breath a while after crossing the finish during the interview.
“Not until I cross the line honestly,” she said on when she knew she won the race. “Last week at the 4x400 relay, I thought I had the race but a girl from another team caught me basically at the line. I really want to just run my whole race and not let that happen again.”
While Brown was all by herself in Toms River last February, she was flanked by some of her teammates, which helped give her the boost she needed.
“I’m happy to have some of my teammates here with me. That made me happy,” Brown added. “Last year I was here by myself so have other girls here supporting is great.”
Brown’s fastest time and personal record is 55.79, which she ran at The Varsity Classic earlier this month. That time is good for third in New Jersey and 23rd in the nation.
